The War Against Uber and Lyft in California

Hello there again readers, and welcome back to Coffee Break Liberty, a blog where I tackle books, news, and many other things under the sun where liberty is a guiding principle. If this is your first time here I would like to extend a special warm welcome to you and hope you enjoy yourself while here.

Should I be surprised at all that the government on California has decided to essentially destroy Uber and Lyft? Sadly, I’m not at all surprised as the warning signs have been there for some time. Well, it looks like it finally went through in Sacramento. Pieces of legislation have been passed that require Uber and Lyft to make their drivers full-time employees. This is done to have these two firms provide benefits for their drivers. What it will do instead is taken income away from 220,000 Californians. Uber and Lyft planned to end operations in the Golden State this week but were granted a stay on a previous ruling. Uber and Lyft have been fighting this law in courts for some time and have essentially bought themselves, 220,000 drivers, and their customers some time.

It’s like I have said before, the government will try to “fix” something and make it much worse. By requiring these firms to now provide benefits for their drivers Uber and Lyft have decided that it would not benefit their business to do so and would cost them money rather than make them money. The potential impact this will have on families across California is huge. Again, the government thinks it is helping those that need help most but instead they hurt them the most. The entire reason there are Uber and Lyft is because of the prices and inconvenience of taxi cab companies that are required to pay their workers certain benefits. Of course, the government doesn’t see this as an issue and rather a model of inefficiency to follow. How many more times are we all gonna see this? How much longer are we gonna put up with this trash?

Allowing the government to interfere with so many aspects of our lives is just becoming worse and worse. The actions taken by these elected officials are simply embarrassing. How did we let it get to this? The whole notion that because someone has more check marks next to there name every two or four years they get to tell others how to live is insane. When we allow the government to do this to firms and us people we are showing them how weak-minded as a whole we are. We need to find the courage and stand up to this tyranny. It’s infuriating that a bunch of people that produce NOTHING are given this power, too much power, to tell others how to live. What is also troubling is that people, when they get that power, feel they must use it by threats of violence. And if those that don’t like what they are being told go against the grain they are fined and or jailed. All this is done under the guise that we are all somehow “free”.

Uber and Lyft are just the latest examples sadly in the saga of the government going after the gig economy. Society as a whole benefits from the gig economy but the government doesn’t like it as it is harder to regulate. The state still gets their stolen tax money but they must have more it seems. They must have the ability to infringe upon more and more people. More laws, regulations, and agencies are always the answer for the government it seems. The government parasites offer nothing but, only take away and slow down progress. They are worthless and should be treated as such.
